Scope
Design and installation of four 30m lighting towers with floodlights, distribution board, and underground reticulation
Programme
Preliminary site investigations and PWC submissions late 2022; PWC review/approval early 2023; construction and switchboard manufacture in 2023; as‑constructed drawings and handover in September 2023.
Project Overview
- Design, supply and installation of an overhead 22 kV HV line from the Power and Water (PWC) network into the mine site,
- pole-mounted transformers (100 kVA and 500 kVA), cross-arm and switch assemblies,
- new distribution boards (630 A and 160 A), LV reticulation and earthing,
- surveys, negotiated connection approvals, QA/ITP documentation, testing, commissioning and handover.
Challenge
- Deliver an HV extension into a brownfield mine site with constrained access and variable ground conditions (rock at pole footing locations).
- Coordinate PWC negotiated connection process, surveys and approvals while manufacturing site‑specific distribution boards (AS/NZS 61439 compliance).
- Maintain electrical safety and quality through structured ITPs and commissioning in a remote setting.
Solution
- Design & approvals: Submitted Negotiated Connection Application (NCA) to PWC; progressed design through issued‑for‑review, approval and as‑constructed stages.
- Overhead works: Procured and installed HV poles (13.5 B/C/D types), cross‑arms, EDO switch assemblies, lightning arrestors, earthing and fluorine conductor including droppers and dead‑ends.
- Transformers & LV: Installed
– 100 kVA and 500 kVA 22 kV pole‑mount transformers with associated LV lightning arrestors, service arms and links;
– distribution boards: 630 A IP66 Form 1 board and 160 A IP56 Form 2BI board (AS/NZS 61439).
- QA & commissioning: Applied Power Services ITP templates; completed earthing tests, LV board checks, transformer commissioning sheets and compiled handover pack.
- Site execution: Managed rock excavation for pole footings and logistics; raised purchase orders for survey, engineering and materials to support schedule.
Results
- Reliable 22 kV supply into the mine with compliant HV assets and documented commissioning.
- Upgraded site distribution capacity via new boards and transformers, improving resilience and future expansion capability.
- Complete handover package (as‑constructed drawings, test sheets and certifications) supporting operations and maintenance.
