Project Overview


MEC NT undertook the Katherine CBD Revitalization Project, delivering electrical, communications, and audio-visual installations to enhance the town square and surrounding infrastructure. The scope included: 


  • Electrical support and installation for a pop‑up café, including temporary and permanent power provisions. 


  • New underground cabling reticulation along railway terrace for public street lighting as well as providing power to public toilets and bike shelter. 


  • Electrical and mechanical support for the installation of a 3 m × 3 m control room, including integration with fire suppression systems. 


  • Supply and installation of infrastructure to facilitate NBN connectivity. 


  • Modification of existing MSB lighting circuits to accommodate luminaires controlled via the town square smart lighting system. 


  • Installation of photovoltaic (PV) systems along shade structures to enhance Section J compliance. 


  • Supply and installation of feature blue LED strip lighting, column lighting, and RGBW smart lighting systems. 


  • Audio‑visual installations, including outdoor visual displays and public address / audio systems.

Challenge


  • The project required revitalizing a key public space while maintaining safety and minimizing disruption. Challenges included: 


  • Coordinating multiple variations and scope changes. 


  • Managing electrical and communications upgrades in a live environment. 


  • Ensuring compliance with NT regulations and integration of smart lighting systems.

Solution


MEC NT delivered a comprehensive solution: 

  • Installed electrical infrastructure to support new amenities and pop-up café. 


  • Implemented smart lighting modifications for enhanced energy efficiency. 


  • Supplied and installed NBN infrastructure for improved connectivity. 


  • Constructed a compliant control room and integrated fire suppression systems. 



  • Provided full QA documentation and as-constructed drawings.
