Project Overview
MEC NT successfully delivered the Apron Floodlighting Upgrade at Darwin International Airport for the Airport Development Group. The project enhanced lighting infrastructure across the Southern GA Apron, Helipad Apron, and Main Apron, improving operational visibility, safety, and reliability for aircraft and helicopter ground operations.
The scope of works included the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of new apron floodlighting infrastructure, including new light poles and reinforced concrete footings, Thorn Champion LED luminaires, lightning protection systems, electrical switchboards, cabling, and below-ground reticulation. The works also involved integration with the PWC power network, ensuring reliable power supply and seamless operation within the airport’s electrical infrastructure.

The project was delivered within the contractual timeframe, from July 2022 to December 2022, with all works completed in accordance with relevant aviation lighting and electrical standards.
Challenge
- Delivering works airside within a live airport environment, requiring strict compliance with security, safety, and environmental controls.
- Managing procurement and installation of long-lead items (poles, luminaires, switchboards) and aligning works with night-time aiming and verification windows.
- Ensuring compliance with CASA MOS Part 139 apron lighting performance, glare control, and documentation requirements.
Solution
- Procured and installed high-output Thorn Champion LED floodlights and associated mounting hardware on new and existing masts.
- Installed/renewed lightning protection, upgraded pole switchboards, and completed below-ground reticulation.
- Sequenced works to minimise operational disruption, coordinated airside permits (ASIC, AUA, ADA), and managed traffic and environmental controls.
- Completed night aiming, functional testing, and photometric verification to confirm illuminance and uniformity.
- Compiled a comprehensive handover package including test records, warranties, and certificates of compliance.
Results
- Improved safety and visibility across the Southern GA apron with modern LED lighting and reduced maintenance burden.
- Documented compliance to aerodrome lighting standards and asset records for airport operations and maintenance.
- Project delivered safely and efficiently within the constraints of a live airport environment.
