Project Overview
MEC NT was engaged to deliver a comprehensive electrical upgrade for the Big Rivers Bus Exchange passenger terminal. The project, located in Katherine, NT, involved the design and installation of area lighting, bus shelter lighting and power, main switchboard (MSB), mains upgrades, and associated civil works. The works were completed in partnership with Kendel Building, with a focus on enhancing safety, visibility, and operational efficiency for public transport users.
Challenge
The project required the integration of new electrical infrastructure within an operational bus terminal, presenting several challenges:
- Ensuring minimal disruption to daily bus operations and passenger safety during installation.
- Coordinating civil works (excavation, trenching, and backfill) in a busy public area.
- Delivering compliant lighting and power solutions to meet NT Government standards.

- Managing logistics and scheduling to align with other contractors and stakeholders.
Solution
MEC NT provided a turnkey solution, including:
- Installation of external area lighting and trenching for new electrical services.
- Upgrades to the main switchboard (MSB) and mains, including new breakers in existing pillars.
- Design and installation of bus shelter lighting and power, with robust containment and cabling.
- Coordination with Katherine Town Council for service identification and telecell provision.
- Implementation of safety measures such as fencing, barricading, and traffic management during works.
- Comprehensive documentation, including as-constructed drawings and compliance records.
Results
- Enhanced safety and visibility for bus passengers and staff through upgraded lighting.
- Improved operational reliability and capacity of the bus terminal’s electrical infrastructure.
- Successful delivery within budget and scheduled timeframe, supporting community transport needs.
